Chapter Seven

The first thing Maddox did after he finally got Daren to calm down, and by calm down he meant knocking him out, was search for Ross. He hated having to do that to his mate, knocking him out. It made him sick to be even remotely violent with the man, but the bloody scratch marks on his face brought on by Daren’s claws stung like a bitch. Worse still was when Daren began scratching himself in a wild fit. Maddox couldn’t continue to let him hurt himself.

When he found Ross standing in the sitting room looking all worried with the other omegas, a soda can in his hand, Maddox’s rage took over and he completely lost his shit.

He marched up to the omega, grabbed him by the throat, and backed him into the wall.

Matt yelped at that and Bastion yelled at him, but he ignored them both. “What did you do?” Maddox bellowed.

Ross’s eyes were wide, and his mouth was gaping like a fish. The soda was gone. Probably spilled somewhere since both of Ross’s hands were gripping Maddox’s wrists tightly.

When he didn’t answer, Maddox pulled him forward and slammed him back against the wall.

“What did you do?” he yelled again, this time letting his fangs come out and showing them to the omega.

“N–nothing!” Ross said, shaking his head.

Bastion’s hands were suddenly on Maddox’s shoulder. Matt probably ran off to get Roarke and Jason.

“Maddox, calm down. Ross is your friend!”

“He’s no friend of mine!” Maddox said. Ross would be dead if Maddox discovered that whatever he put in that water glass was lethal.

Maddox’s hands tightened around Ross’s throat. Ross’s face began changing color.

“Put him down, now.”

That wasn’t Roarke’s voice giving Maddox the order. It was Ash’s.

Maddox had followed Ash as one would an alpha of a pack when he was escorting the omegas and any other luna werewolf he could find to this place. Even though Ash was a bear shifter and no longer in a position of power over Maddox, he still felt compelled to obey the command and put Ross down.

He released the grip his fingers had on Ross’s neck. He didn’t expect the smaller man to drop down like he did. Had Maddox really been holding the man off the ground?

Only then did he manage to come back to himself enough to realize what he’d been doing.

Ross was an omega, and smaller than Maddox was. He was the one who was always so quiet and shy back when they’d been traveling together. He’d slept close to Maddox and avoided everyone else because he’d been afraid of them before finally opening up, and Maddox had even considered the smaller man to be a friend.

Seeing the way Ross was curled up on the floor, holding onto his neck which no doubt hurt after the punishment Maddox had just given it, made him feel sick.

Bastion went down and put his arms around Ross’s shoulders. Ross allowed it, which surprised Maddox since the man rarely let anyone touch him like that.
